How the mulch calculator works
The formula is straightforward: area × depth, converted from cubic feet to cubic yards. One cubic yard of mulch covers 324 square feet at 1 inch of depth, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, or 108 sq ft at 3 inches.
How deep should mulch be?
The sweet spot for most mulch applications is 2–3 inches. Too thin and weeds push through within weeks. Too thick and moisture gets trapped against plant stems, inviting rot and fungal disease.
- 2" — flower beds, annual plantings
- 3" — shrub beds, tree rings, pathways
- 4" — playground areas (safety surfacing)
Bulk vs. bagged mulch
Bagged mulch costs 2–3x more per cubic yard than bulk delivery. For anything over 3 cubic yards, bulk delivery saves significant money. Most landscape suppliers deliver for free above 3–5 yard minimums.
Methodology. Volume = Area (sq ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 to get cubic feet, then ÷ 27 for cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch depth. Bags calculated at 2 cubic feet per bag (standard retail size). Includes a 10% waste factor.

Frequently asked questions
How many bags of mulch do I need for 500 sq ft? +
At 3 inches deep: 500 × 3/12 = 125 cu ft. With 10% waste, that's about 138 cu ft or 69 bags (2 cu ft each). In bulk, that's roughly 5.1 cubic yards.
How much does a yard of mulch cover? +
One cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch depth, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, and 108 sq ft at 3 inches. These are the numbers to remember for quick back-of-envelope estimates.
Should I remove old mulch before adding new? +
Not usually. Old mulch decomposes into the soil, adding organic matter. Only remove it if it's contaminated, infested, or has built up past 4 inches. Simply rake the existing layer to break up any matting, then add fresh mulch on top.
