How the gutter calculator works
Enter the total eave perimeter of your roof (the edges where gutters will be installed), the number of stories, and your preferred material. The calculator determines the linear footage, appropriate number of downspouts, and breaks down material and labor costs.
Gutter material comparison
- Aluminum — $6/ft, 20–30 year lifespan, most popular residential choice
- Vinyl — $4/ft, 10–15 year lifespan, easiest DIY install
- Steel — $9/ft, 20–30 year lifespan, strongest option
- Copper — $25/ft, 50+ year lifespan, premium appearance
Downspout placement
Place one downspout every 30–40 linear feet of gutter. At minimum, every corner needs a downspout. Extend downspouts at least 4 feet from the foundation, or connect to underground drain lines to prevent water damage.
Methodology. Linear feet = Roof perimeter (eave length). Downspouts = max(2, ceil(Perimeter ÷ 35)). Downspout length = Stories × 10 ft each. Material + labor pricing varies by material type. Aluminum: $6/ft material + $8/ft labor.

Frequently asked questions
How many downspouts do I need? +
One downspout per 30–40 feet of gutter, with a minimum of 2. A home with 160 linear feet of gutter needs 4–5 downspouts. In heavy-rain areas, lean toward the shorter spacing.
Should I get seamless or sectional gutters? +
Seamless gutters (formed on-site from a continuous coil) cost slightly more but virtually eliminate leaks at joints. Sectional gutters are cheaper and DIY-friendly but require sealant at every joint, which can fail over time.
Do I need gutter guards? +
If you have overhanging trees, gutter guards save hours of annual cleaning and prevent clogs. Micro-mesh guards ($6–$12/ft installed) are the most effective. Budget screens ($1–$3/ft) help but still require some maintenance.
How much do gutters cost to install? +
Aluminum gutters run $14–$18/linear foot installed (material + labor). A typical home with 160 linear feet of gutter costs $2,200–$2,900 installed. Copper doubles or triples that range.
